Studying in Germany from Nepal costs about Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh for the first year at a public university, because most charge little or no tuition. You need a blocked account of €11,904, an admission letter and, for a bachelor's after +2, usually a Studienkolleg year first. Last year 89 of our 96 Germany visa files were approved.

No direct entry after +2. A year of German in Kathmandu and a Studienkolleg place got him into a tuition-free bachelor's.
The essentials
Germany is the cheapest strong option we cover. Most public universities charge no tuition, only a semester contribution, and a degree gives you 18 months to find a job afterwards.
The catch is time and language. Admissions are slow and competitive, the visa appointment in Kathmandu can take weeks, and while many master's are taught in English, most jobs, part-time or full-time, need German.
The table has the numbers. The process and visa section shows every step.
| Tuition | No tuition at most public universities; a semester contribution of about €150 to €400. Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 a semester. Private universities: €10,000 to €20,000 a year. |
|---|---|
| Blocked account | €11,904 for the first year (€992 a month), paid into a blocked account before the visa. You withdraw €992 a month after you arrive. |
| First-year cost | About Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh at a public university, all in: blocked account, semester fees, health insurance, visa and flight. A private university adds Rs 17 lakh to Rs 34 lakh. |
| Entry after +2 | Usually not direct. Either a Studienkolleg foundation year (entrance test, German at B1 to B2), or one year of a related bachelor's in Nepal first. |
| Entry after a bachelor's | A related bachelor's with good marks. Universities convert your marks to the German scale; around 60% or CGPA 3.0 opens most doors, less narrows the choice. |
| English or German | English-taught master's: IELTS 6.5 or equal. German-taught courses: German at C1 level (TestDaF or DSH). |
| Intakes | Winter semester (October) is the main one; some courses start in summer (April). Deadlines are often 15 July and 15 January, earlier for non-EU applicants. |
| Work while studying | 140 full days or 280 half days a year. University student jobs don't count. |
| Stay after study | Up to 18 months on a residence permit to look for a job in your field. |
| Permanent residence | Possible after a few years of skilled work in Germany, faster with good German. Never automatic. |
Living in Germany
Your blocked account pays out €992 a month, and in most cities that covers a shared flat and food. In Munich it doesn't.
| City | Rent (shared flat) | Food | Health insurance | Total a month | In rupees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Munich | €700 to 900 | €250 to 300 | €140 | €1,150 to 1,400 | Rs 1.97 to 2.4 lakh |
| Berlin | €550 to 750 | €230 to 280 | €140 | €1,000 to 1,250 | Rs 1.71 to 2.14 lakh |
| Aachen | €430 to 600 | €220 to 270 | €140 | €850 to 1,050 | Rs 1.46 to 1.8 lakh |
| Leipzig or Dresden | €380 to 500 | €220 to 260 | €140 | €800 to 1,000 | Rs 1.37 to 1.71 lakh |
You can work 140 full days or 280 half days a year, plus student jobs at your university. Germany's minimum wage is €13.90 an hour from 1 January 2026 (Federal Ministry of Labour). A mini-job lets you earn up to €603 a month without tax.
Without German, part-time work is mostly warehouses, delivery, cleaning and kitchens. With B1 German, retail, restaurants and student assistant jobs open up. Most of our students find work in 1 to 3 months.
Your blocked account covers living costs; part-time work is extra, not a plan to survive. Start German before you fly. It decides your job options more than your degree does.
Germany is short of engineers, IT specialists, nurses and skilled trades, and the 18-month job-search permit gives you time to find work in your field. The graduates who get hired fastest speak German at B2 or better.
The Make it in Germany portal, run by the government, lists shortage occupations and the visa routes after study.
Germany's Nepali community is small but growing, mainly in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and university towns. Expect paperwork: registering your address (Anmeldung) within 2 weeks, a tax ID, health insurance, and a residence permit appointment.
Teaching is independent, exams are hard, and many students take longer than the standard time to finish. Winters are grey and long. Shops close on Sundays.

The process
Plan for 6 to 9 months from first call to flight for a master's, longer if you need Studienkolleg. German admissions and the visa appointment take most of the time, so we start backwards from the application deadline.

Germany handles "study in Germany" and "Germany student visa" as one question, so here's the visa in full.
You apply for a national (D) visa for study at the German Embassy in Kathmandu, in person. After you arrive, you swap it for a residence permit at the local foreigners' office.
| What | Detail |
|---|---|
| Who decides | German Embassy Kathmandu, with the foreigners' office in your university town |
| Visa fee | €75 |
| Proof of money | Blocked account with €11,904, a scholarship letter, or a formal sponsor declaration (Verpflichtungserklärung) |
| Health insurance | Travel insurance for the first days, then statutory student insurance from enrolment |
| Processing time | Often 4 to 12 weeks after the appointment; appointment waits vary, so book early |
| Interview | Questions at the appointment about your course, plans and money |
The embassy's own checklist decides the documents. It changes from time to time, so we download it again on the day we build your file: German Embassy Kathmandu.
Common reasons for German refusals in files we've seen from other agents: a course that doesn't follow from the student's degree, a motivation letter copied from the internet, and missing language evidence for German-taught courses.
Our fee sits in the same table as every government and university fee, so nothing turns up later.

What happens after
Register your address (Anmeldung) within 2 weeks, open a German bank account, activate your blocked account payouts, enrol, and book your residence permit appointment. Housing is the hardest part; many students start in a temporary room.
Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing.
German degrees are demanding and exams are often all at the end of the semester. Many students take an extra semester to finish. Learn German from day one. It's the difference between a warehouse job and a job in your field.
You can stay up to 18 months to look for a job that matches your degree, and work in any job while you look. Once you're employed in your field, you can switch to a work residence permit or an EU Blue Card if the salary qualifies. Permanent residence is possible after a few years of work, faster with good German.
The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate: residence permit extensions, changing course, health insurance questions, or a landlord problem.

An honest note
Don't bet your future on one country. Canada was the top choice for Nepali students until the caps came, and Nepali study permits fell 40.6% in a single year. Germany's rules can change too. We cover Australia and 9 European countries so the advice can follow the rules.
About Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh for the first year at a public university: the €11,904 blocked account (your living money), semester contributions, health insurance, the €75 visa and your flight. A private university adds €10,000 to €20,000 a year in tuition.
Tuition is free at most public universities, but you still pay a semester contribution (about €150 to €400), and Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 a semester. Living costs are the real expense, which is why the blocked account exists.
Usually not directly. Most students with a Nepali +2 need a Studienkolleg foundation year first (with an entrance test and German at B1 to B2), or one year of a related bachelor's in Nepal. Roshan's story shows the Studienkolleg route.
€11,904 for a year, which pays out €992 a month after you arrive. Check the current figure with the German Embassy Kathmandu before you transfer.
For English-taught courses you need proof of English, usually IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL. Some universities accept a medium of instruction letter, but the embassy may still ask how you'll manage. For German-taught courses you need German at C1 instead.
Yes, but your choice narrows. German universities convert your marks to the German scale and many have a cut-off. A related degree and relevant work help. Dipesh got in with a 2.9 CGPA.
Yes: 140 full days or 280 half days a year, plus university student jobs. The minimum wage is €13.90 an hour from 1 January 2026. Without German, the jobs are mostly physical work.
Often 4 to 12 weeks after your embassy appointment, and appointment waits vary. Book the appointment as soon as you have your admission letter, or earlier if the embassy allows.
