The essentials

Norway: cost, entry and work rules

If someone tells you Norway is free, they're out of date. Public universities have charged students from outside Europe since autumn 2023. Norway is now one of the most expensive countries we cover.

It's still worth it for some students: Norway is among the strongest places to study marine science, energy and engineering, and wages are high. We file far fewer students to Norway than to Finland or Sweden, and we tell you why on the first call.

Study in Norway: the essentials
TuitionAbout NOK 130,000 to 250,000 a year at most programmes, more for some (about Rs 19 lakh to Rs 36.5 lakh).
Living funds for the permitNOK 170,368 for the 2026/27 academic year, usually deposited with the university or in a Norwegian bank account. UDI
First-year costAbout Rs 45 lakh to Rs 63 lakh: tuition, living funds, the permit fee and your flight.
Entry after +2Very limited: a Nepali +2 alone usually isn't enough for a Norwegian bachelor's. Most Nepali students come for a master's.
Entry after a bachelor'sA related bachelor's (usually 3 or 4 years) with good marks; each programme sets its own minimum.
English scoreIELTS 6.5 for most master's (some ask 6.0 or 7.0).
DeadlinesUsually 1 December to 1 March for August starts, earlier than most of Europe.
Work while studying20 hours a week in term, full-time in holidays.
Stay after studyA job-seeker permit for up to 1 year.
Rupee figures at about Rs 14.6 per NOK (worked out from the Nepal Rastra Bank euro rate, 18 October 2026). Funds figure from university pages citing UDI; confirm on udi.no before you transfer.

Part-time jobs

You can work 20 hours a week in term and full-time in holidays. Most jobs have no legal minimum wage, but pay is high: student jobs usually pay about NOK 180 to 230 an hour. Without Norwegian, jobs are mostly cleaning, delivery, warehouses and kitchens.

High wages don't make Norway cheap. Living costs rise with them, and tuition must be paid up front.

Jobs after study

Norway hires in energy, maritime, aquaculture, engineering and health. Norwegian is expected in most workplaces outside international firms and research. The job-seeker permit gives you up to a year to find skilled work.

Culture and daily life

The Nepali community is small. Norwegians are outdoorsy and private; friendships come through clubs and sport. Winters are long, dark and wet on the west coast, cold inland. Everything is expensive, so students cook at home.

What happens after

After you land in Norway

Your first week

Register with the police (or the service centre for foreign workers), collect your residence card, get your identity number, enrol and open a bank account so your deposit can be released. Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing.

Work and study, honestly

Norwegian master's are research-heavy and independent. Part-time work pays well, but the 20-hour limit and high prices mean it covers living costs, not tuition. The dark months are hard; students who join outdoor clubs cope best.

After graduation

You can apply for a job-seeker permit for up to a year. Once you have a skilled job offer, you move to a work permit. Norwegian makes the difference in most job searches.

Our support after you land

The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate: permit renewals, the second-year tuition and funds, or housing problems.

Be honest with yourself

Is Norway right for you?

Good fit

Norway is a good fit if

  • Your field is one Norway is strong in: marine science, energy, maritime, engineering.
  • Your family can pay tuition and NOK 170,368 up front, without a loan that frightens them.
  • You're willing to learn Norwegian for the job market.

An honest note

Norway is not the right choice if

  • You chose Norway because someone said it's free. It isn't, since 2023.
  • Your budget is under Rs 40 lakh for the first year. Finland or Germany will serve you better.
  • You want a bachelor's straight after +2.
  • You need a large Nepali community around you.

Don't bet your future on one country. Norway introduced tuition in 2023; Canada's caps cut Nepali study permits by 40.6% in a year. A consultancy that only knows one country will push you there anyway. Pema's story shows how we compared Norway with Finland before she chose.

Questions about studying in Norway

Is study in Norway free for Nepali students?

No. Since autumn 2023, public universities charge tuition to students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. Expect about NOK 130,000 to 250,000 a year for most programmes.

How much does it cost to study in Norway from Nepal?

About Rs 45 lakh to Rs 63 lakh for the first year: tuition, NOK 170,368 living funds (2026/27), the NOK 5,400 permit fee and your flight, at about Rs 14.6 per NOK.

How much bank balance is required for Norway?

NOK 170,368 for the 2026/27 academic year, usually deposited with your university or in a Norwegian bank account. The amount changes every year; check UDI before you transfer.

Can I work in Norway while studying?

Yes: 20 hours a week in term and full-time in holidays. Student jobs usually pay NOK 180 to 230 an hour.

Can I study in Norway after +2?

Rarely. A Nepali +2 alone usually doesn't meet the entry rules for a Norwegian bachelor's. Most Nepali students go to Norway for a master's.

Can I stay in Norway after my studies?

You can apply for a job-seeker permit for up to a year after graduating, then move to a work permit once you have a skilled job.
