Study in the UK from Nepal

A one-year master's in the UK costs about Rs 55 lakh to Rs 85 lakh all in, depending on the city. You need a CAS from the university, funds held for 28 days, a TB test in Kathmandu and usually IELTS 6.5. Last year 153 of our 168 UK visa files were approved. Most students fly 3 to 5 months after the first call.

The essentials

UK: cost, entry and work rules

The UK's big advantage is time. Most master's take one year, so you pay one year of rent and start working sooner. The degree is recognised everywhere, and the Graduate visa gives you time to find a job afterwards.

The trade-offs: tuition is high, family members can't come with you on a taught master's, and the funds rule is strict about dates. Most UK refusals we see from other agents are about money held for the wrong number of days.

The table has the numbers. The process section shows what each costs and when.

Study in the UK: the essentials
Tuition£14,000 to £25,000 a year for most master's and bachelor's (about Rs 28.4 lakh to Rs 50.7 lakh). London and medicine cost more.
Living funds for the visa£1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to 9 months, held for 28 days in a row. Rising to £1,203 and £1,570 for applications from 30 November 2026. gov.uk
One-year master'sAbout Rs 55 lakh to Rs 85 lakh all in: tuition, living costs, the £558 visa fee, the health surcharge and your flight.
Marks after +2Usually 60% to 75% (or GPA 2.8 to 3.4) for direct entry to a bachelor's. Lower, and a one-year foundation course comes first.
Marks after a bachelor'sUsually 50% to 60%, or CGPA 2.5 to 3.0, for a master's. Some universities accept less with work experience.
Study gapNo official limit. Universities and the visa officer want the gap explained, with evidence.
English scoreIELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall for most courses (UKVI IELTS for foundation and pre-sessional courses). Some universities accept their own test or an interview.
IntakesSeptember is the main one. January at many universities; a few start in May.
Work while studying20 hours a week in term at degree level, full-time in official vacations.
Stay after studyGraduate visa: 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months after that. 3 years after a PhD.
FamilyPartners and children can only come with you on postgraduate research courses (such as a PhD), not on a taught master's.
Rupee figures at Rs 202.99 per GBP (Nepal Rastra Bank sell rate, 18 October 2026). Entry marks are typical of the 41 UK universities we work with; each sets its own.

Living in UK

Money, work and daily life in the UK

Cost of living, city by city

A student sharing a house typically spends this in a month in 2026. London rent is in a different league; most of our students study outside it.

Monthly living costs for a student in the UK, 2026
CityRent (shared)FoodTransport and phoneTotal a monthIn rupees
London£850 to 1,150£250 to 320£170 to 210£1,300 to 1,700Rs 2.6 to 3.5 lakh
Manchester£550 to 750£230 to 300£120 to 160£950 to 1,250Rs 1.9 to 2.5 lakh
Birmingham£520 to 720£230 to 300£110 to 150£900 to 1,200Rs 1.8 to 2.4 lakh
Leeds£480 to 680£220 to 290£110 to 150£850 to 1,150Rs 1.7 to 2.3 lakh
Our students' typical spend, sharing a house. Energy bills are usually included in student rents. At Rs 202.99 per GBP.

Part-time jobs

At degree level you can work 20 hours a week in term and full-time in official vacations. The National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour from 1 April 2026 (gov.uk).

Our students usually find work in 3 to 10 weeks: retail, supermarkets, care homes, warehouses, restaurants and university jobs. At 20 hours a week that's about £1,100 a month before tax, which covers most of your living costs outside London.

A one-year master's has short vacations and a dissertation over the summer, so you'll work fewer full-time weeks than you think. Plan to pay tuition from home. Working more than 20 hours in a term week breaks your visa conditions.

Jobs after study

The Graduate visa lets you work in any job, without a sponsor, for 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026 and 18 months after that. It's time to get experience, not a route to settlement on its own.

To stay longer you'll usually need an employer to sponsor you on a Skilled Worker visa, and the salary thresholds rose sharply in 2024 and 2025. Health and care, engineering, IT and finance are where our graduates have found sponsors; business and management graduates find it hardest.

Culture and daily life

The UK has an old, settled Nepali community, much of it built around Gurkha families in Aldershot, Farnborough, Reading and Ashford, and Nepali students are in every big university city. Nepali shops and restaurants are easy to find.

Teaching is independent: fewer class hours, more reading and essays, and strict rules on plagiarism and attendance. Winters are dark by 4 pm. The weather is mild but grey, and the NHS covers your healthcare once you've paid the surcharge.

What happens after

After you land in the UK

Your first week

Collect or activate your immigration status (most students now get an eVisa), enrol at the university, register with a GP, open a bank account and get a UK SIM. Freshers' week is when most students find their friends and their first job leads.

Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing to check on housing, enrolment and money.

Work and study, honestly

A one-year master's moves fast: 2 teaching terms and a dissertation. Students who take 20 hours of work in the first term often fall behind on the first assignments. Treat the first 6 weeks as study weeks. Attendance is monitored, and the university reports students who stop attending.

After graduation

The Graduate visa gives you 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months after that, to work in any job. To stay on after it, most graduates need an employer to sponsor them on a Skilled Worker visa, which comes with salary rules. Some of our graduates have made that move; many come home or go elsewhere with UK experience. Pick a course you'd value either way.

Our support after you land

The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate: changing accommodation, a resit, extending a deadline, or planning the Graduate visa application.

Be honest with yourself

Is the UK right for you?

Good fit

UK is a good fit if

  • You want a master's in one year and to start working sooner.
  • Your family can hold the full amount in the bank for 28 days without touching it.
  • Your marks and English are solid (around 55% or more, IELTS 6.5).
  • You're planning to go alone; a taught master's doesn't allow family to join you.

An honest note

UK is not the right choice if

  • You want to bring your husband, wife or children on a taught master's. The rules don't allow it.
  • Your money will only be in the account for a few days. The 28-day rule is checked line by line.
  • You're counting on a UK job paying enough for sponsorship straight after a business degree.
  • You were refused before and want to re-apply without fixing the reason. We'll fix it first.

A refusal is a file problem, not a fate. Most UK refusals have a written reason, and re-applying without fixing it is how students get refused twice. Before any re-application, we write down exactly why the first one failed, and fix that first. Nischal's story shows how.

Questions about studying in the UK

How much does it cost to study in the UK from Nepal?

A one-year master's costs about Rs 55 lakh to Rs 85 lakh all in: tuition of £14,000 to £25,000, living costs, the £558 visa fee, the health surcharge (about £1,164 for a one-year master's) and your flight. That's at Rs 202.99 per GBP (18 October 2026).

How much bank balance do I need for a UK student visa?

Your unpaid first-year tuition plus living costs: £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to 9 months. The money must be held for 28 days in a row, ending within 31 days of your application.

For applications from 30 November 2026 the living amounts rise to £1,203 and £1,570. Check the current figure on gov.uk.

Can I take my spouse to the UK on a student visa?

Only if you're on a postgraduate research course, such as a PhD. Since January 2024, students on taught master's courses can't bring dependants. We tell every student this on the first call.

Do I need IELTS for the UK?

Most universities ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, or another test they accept. Some accept their own online test or an interview for students with strong English from school. Foundation and pre-sessional courses need UKVI IELTS. Our IELTS classes run every second Sunday.

What is a CAS and when do I get it?

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is the reference number your university gives you once you've met the offer conditions, passed its interview and paid the deposit. You need it to apply for the visa. Check every detail on it before you use it; mistakes cause refusals.

Is the UK Graduate visa still 2 years?

Yes, if you apply by 31 December 2026. Applications after that get 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. PhD graduates get 3 years. Check gov.uk for the current rule.

Why do UK student visas get refused for Nepali students?

In the files we've fixed: money not held for the full 28 days, bank letters missing details the rules require, CAS details that didn't match, and credibility interviews where the student couldn't explain the course or the cost.

Our UK approval rate was 91.1% in FY 2025/26: 153 of 168 files.

Can I work full-time in the UK as a student?

Only in official vacations. During term, degree-level students can work 20 hours a week. Breaking that limit can lead to your visa being cancelled.
