The essentials

Finland: cost, entry and work rules

Finland suits students who want a European degree at lower tuition than the UK or Australia, with scholarships that most Nepali students don't know about. Most universities cut first-year tuition by 50% or more for good applicants.

The trade-offs are timing and language. There's one main application window, in January, and many jobs, especially in nursing and care, need Finnish.

The table has the numbers. The process and permit section shows every step.

Study in Finland: the essentials
TuitionAbout €6,000 to €12,000 a year at universities of applied sciences, €10,000 to €18,000 at universities, before scholarships. Most offer 50% to 100% off the first year for strong applicants.
Living funds for the permit€800 a month: €9,600 in your account when you apply for a programme of a year or more. Money for tuition doesn't count. Migri
First-year costAbout Rs 25 lakh to Rs 40 lakh: tuition after scholarship, €9,600 living funds, the permit fee, insurance and your flight.
Entry after +2Bachelor's at universities of applied sciences: +2 with an entrance exam (or SAT) and English. Marks matter less than the exam.
Entry after a bachelor'sA related bachelor's, usually with CGPA 2.7 or more; some master's ask for 2 years of work experience.
English scoreIELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for most English-taught degrees, or the PTE or TOEFL equal.
How you applyThe joint application on Studyinfo.fi, usually in early to mid January for August starts. A smaller round in September for January starts.
Work while studyingAn average of 30 hours a week over the year, full-time in holidays.
Stay after studyA residence permit to look for work or start a business, for up to 2 years.
Permanent residencePossible after continuous residence and work. Finnish language helps a great deal.
Rupee figures at Rs 171.38 per EUR (Nepal Rastra Bank sell rate, 18 October 2026). Tuition and scholarships are set by each university; we check them on the university's own page each year.

Living in Finland

Money, work and daily life in Finland

Cost of living, city by city

Student housing is cheaper than the private market, so apply for it the day you get your offer.

Helsinki and Espoo€400 to 600€280 to 340€50 to 70€850 to 1,050Rs 1.46 to 1.8 lakh

Tampere and Turku€350 to 500€260 to 320€40 to 60€750 to 950Rs 1.29 to 1.63 lakh
Oulu€320 to 460€250 to 300€40 to 60€700 to 900Rs 1.2 to 1.54 lakh
Our students' typical spend in student housing. Private rent costs more. At Rs 171.38 per EUR.

Part-time jobs

You can work an average of 30 hours a week, counted over the year, and full-time in holidays. Finland has no single minimum wage; pay is set by sector agreements, and the jobs students do usually pay about €11 to €13 an hour.

Cleaning, food delivery, warehouses, restaurants and newspaper delivery are the common first jobs. English-only jobs are fewer than in the UK or Australia, and finding the first one can take 1 to 4 months.

Don't plan to pay tuition from part-time work. Students who start Finnish in the first semester find work faster and better paid.

Jobs after study

Finland is short of nurses, care workers, software developers and engineers. Most employers want Finnish for anything customer-facing, and nursing needs it for registration. IT and engineering jobs in Helsinki, Espoo and Tampere are the most open to English speakers.

Culture and daily life

The Nepali community in Finland has grown fast in the last 10 years, mostly in the Helsinki region, Tampere and Turku. Finns are reserved but direct and reliable; punctuality matters.

Winters are long and dark: in Helsinki, about 6 hours of daylight in December, less further north. Budget for proper winter clothes: a good jacket and boots cost about €150 to €250, less second-hand. Teaching is project-based, with small groups and a lot of independence.

What happens after

After you land in Finland

Your first week

Register your address, collect your residence permit card, enrol, join the student union (it gives you cheaper meals and health services), and get a bank account and phone number. Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing.

We mean that call. A student we placed in Finland rang our Kathmandu number at 11 pm in her first week because her housing had fallen through. Her counsellor stayed on the phone, called the university's housing office the next morning Finnish time, and she had a room by Thursday.

Work and study, honestly

Finnish teaching is project-based and self-directed. Nobody chases you, so it's easy to fall behind. The 30-hour average gives you room to work, but the first winter is hard: short days, cold, and homesickness. Students who join clubs and start Finnish early settle fastest.

After graduation

You can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business for up to 2 years after you graduate. Once you're working, you move onto a work-based permit. Permanent residence needs years of continuous residence; Finnish language helps with both jobs and the process.

Our support after you land

The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate: renewing your permit, scholarship conditions for year 2, housing problems, or moving between programmes.

Be honest with yourself

Is Finland right for you?

Good fit

Finland is a good fit if

  • You want lower tuition than the UK or Australia, and you're a strong enough student for a scholarship.
  • You can be ready for the January joint application.
  • You're open to learning Finnish, especially for nursing or care.
  • You're comfortable with long, dark winters and an independent way of studying.

An honest note

Finland is not the right choice if

  • You need to fly within 3 months. Finland's main application is once a year.
  • You want a nursing job without learning Finnish. Registration and most jobs need it.
  • You're counting on part-time work to pay your tuition.
  • You need a big Nepali community and English-speaking jobs everywhere. Finland is smaller and more Finnish-speaking.

Don't bet your future on one country. Canada was the top choice for Nepali students until the caps came, and Nepali study permits fell 40.6% in a single year. We cover Australia and 9 European countries so the advice can follow the rules, not the other way round.

Questions about studying in Finland

How much does it cost to study in Finland from Nepal?

About Rs 25 lakh to Rs 40 lakh for the first year: tuition after scholarship, the €9,600 living funds, the €600 permit fee, insurance and your flight, at Rs 171.38 per EUR (18 October 2026).

How much bank balance is required for Finland?

€800 for each month of study; for a programme of a year or more, €9,600 must be in your own account when you apply. Money set aside for tuition doesn't count. See Migri's income rules.

Is education free in Finland for Nepali students?

No. Since 2017, students from outside the EU pay tuition for English-taught bachelor's and master's. Most universities offer scholarships that cut the first year by 50% to 100%, and some continue them if you earn enough credits.

Can I study in Finland without IELTS?

Some universities accept PTE, TOEFL or their own English test, and a few accept earlier studies in English. Many still ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. We check each programme's rule before you apply.

When is the Finland intake and deadline?

The main joint application for August starts is usually in early to mid January on Studyinfo.fi. A smaller round in September covers some January starts. If you miss January, you usually wait a year.

Can I work in Finland while studying?

Yes: an average of 30 hours a week over the year, and full-time in holidays. Pay is set by sector agreements, usually about €11 to €13 an hour in the jobs students do.

Can I study nursing in Finland in English?

Yes, some universities of applied sciences teach nursing in English, but to work as a nurse in Finland you'll need Finnish. Plan language study from year 1. Pratiksha's story shows how.

How long can I stay in Finland after graduation?

You can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business for up to 2 years after graduating.
