Study nursing abroad from Nepal

For most Nepali students, Australia, the UK and Finland are the realistic places to study nursing in English. Australia and the UK lead to registration in English with IELTS 7.0; Finland is cheaper but needs Finnish for the job. Last year 187 of our 201 nursing and health files were approved.

Country by country

Where to study nursing

The question isn't only where you can study nursing in English. It's where the degree lets you register and work as a nurse. That rules some countries in and some out.

Already a nurse with a BSc from Nepal? You may not need a degree at all: Australia and the UK assess overseas nurses directly. We'll tell you which route is cheaper for you.

If you want public health or programme work rather than bedside nursing, English-taught master's in Europe open up. Sabina and Binita went that way.

Entry requirements

What you need from Nepal

  • After +2: science with biology, usually with good marks in biology and English. Some universities ask for chemistry too.
  • Registered nurses from Nepal: a BSc Nursing (or PCL Nursing plus experience) with Nepal Nursing Council registration and a good-standing letter.
  • English: IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 for admission; the regulators in Australia and the UK need about 7.0 to register.
  • Health checks: vaccinations and a police check before clinical placements.

Levels and course types

Which level fits you

  • Bachelor of Nursing (3 years in Australia and the UK, 3.5 in Finland): the route after +2.
  • Master's that lead to registration (about 2 years): for graduates in another field, and sometimes for nurses whose degree isn't recognised.
  • Master's that don't lead to registration (leadership, education, public health): useful for careers, but they won't make you a nurse in that country. Check before you pay.
  • Assessment routes for overseas nurses: if you're already registered in Nepal, Australia and the UK assess you directly, without a degree.

Registration and language

Before you can work in the field

Registration is the whole point. Australia's Nursing and Midwifery Board and the UK's Nursing and Midwifery Council set English and education standards, and only approved courses lead to registration.

English for registration is higher than for the visa: about IELTS 7.0 in Australia and the UK (the UK accepts 6.5 in writing). In Finland, you'll need Finnish to work, even if you studied in English.

Ask any consultancy which regulator approves the course, and get the answer in writing.

After study

Jobs, honestly

Registered nurses are in shortage in Australia, the UK and Finland, and graduate nurses usually find work. The first job is often in aged care or night shifts; it gets better with experience.

Jobs and Skills Australia lists registered nurses among shortage occupations (Occupation Shortage List). In Finland, Finnish at B1 or above is what separates nurses who get hospital jobs from those who stay in care homes.

How we help

Your nursing application

Nursing files need more than a statement. We check that the course leads to registration, collect your Nepal Nursing Council documents and experience letters, plan your IELTS for the registration score, and check the clinical placement requirements before you accept an offer.

If you're already a nurse, we compare the assessment route with a degree route, in rupees, before you decide.

An honest note

This isn't the right course for you if

  • You want a nursing job abroad without a high English score. Registration needs about 7.0.
  • You want nursing in Germany, Norway or Sweden without learning the language.
  • Your +2 wasn't in science. Most nursing bachelor's need biology.
  • Someone has offered a nursing course that doesn't lead to registration as a route to a nursing job.

Questions about studying nursing abroad

Which country is best for nursing for Nepali students?

For an English-taught degree that leads to registration, Australia and the UK. Finland is cheaper but you'll need Finnish to work. The best one depends on your budget, your English and whether you're already a nurse.

Can I study nursing abroad after +2 management?

Usually not directly. Most nursing bachelor's need +2 science with biology. Some students take a bridging or foundation course first; it adds time and cost.

What IELTS score do I need for nursing?

About 6.5 to 7.0 for admission, and about 7.0 to register as a nurse in Australia or the UK (the UK accepts 6.5 in writing). Our IELTS classes run writing-focused batches.

I'm already a nurse in Nepal. Do I need to study again?

Not always. Australia and the UK assess overseas nurses directly, which can be cheaper than a degree. A degree comes with a student visa and post-study work rights, which some nurses prefer. We compare both for you.

Can I study nursing in Finland in English?

Yes, at some universities of applied sciences. To work as a nurse in Finland, you'll need Finnish. Pratiksha started Finnish before she flew.

How much does it cost to study nursing in Australia from Nepal?

About Rs 66 lakh to Rs 84 lakh for the first year, all in, before part-time income. See the Australia page for the breakdown.
