The essentials

Belgium: cost, entry and work rules

Belgium is a quieter choice with good public universities and tuition well below the UK's or the Netherlands'. The first decision is which half of Belgium: Flemish universities (Leuven, Ghent, Antwerp) teach many master's in English; French-speaking ones (Brussels, Louvain-la-Neuve, Liège) teach mostly in French.

Belgium also asks for a medical certificate and a police clearance with the visa, so start those early.

Study in Belgium: the essentials
TuitionFlemish universities: about €6,000 to €12,000 a year for non-EU master's. French-speaking: up to about €4,175 a year for most non-EU students (about Rs 7.2 lakh to Rs 20.6 lakh).
Living funds€1,062 net a month for 2026–27 (about €12,744 a year), shown through a blocked account, a bank guarantee or a sponsor. Study in Flanders
First-year costAbout Rs 31 lakh to Rs 45 lakh: tuition, living funds, visa and administrative fees, and your flight.
Entry after +2Limited: English-taught bachelor's are few, and a Nepali +2 may need extra steps. Most Nepali students come for a master's.
Entry after a bachelor'sA related bachelor's with good marks; some master's need a preparatory year first.
English scoreIELTS 6.5 for most English-taught master's (some 7.0).
DeadlinesOften 1 March to 1 April for non-EU applicants for September; some earlier.
Work while studying20 hours a week in term, more in holidays.
Stay after studyA search year of 12 months to look for work or start a business.
Rupee figures at Rs 171.38 per EUR (Nepal Rastra Bank sell rate, 18 October 2026). The funds amount is updated every academic year.

Part-time jobs

You can work 20 hours a week in term and more in official holidays. Student jobs in Belgium are common in retail, hospitality, warehouses and events, and Dutch or French helps a lot. Pay is usually above €12 an hour.

Plan to live on your funds; part-time work adds to them. Brussels has the most English-speaking jobs.

Jobs after study

The search year gives you 12 months to find work. Brussels has international organisations and companies that hire in English; elsewhere, Dutch or French matters. Engineering, IT, logistics and life sciences are the strongest fields.

Culture and daily life

Belgium is small, well connected by train, and multilingual. The Nepali community is small, mostly in Brussels and Antwerp. Weather is mild and grey. Student towns like Leuven and Ghent are lively and affordable compared with Amsterdam or Paris.

What happens after

After you land in Belgium

Your first week

Register at your local commune within 8 days, get your residence card (A card), enrol and open a bank account. Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing.

Work and study, honestly

Belgian exams are often oral as well as written, and many students resit in August. Keep term work to 20 hours or less, and learn some Dutch or French: it's the difference in the job market.

After graduation

The search year gives you 12 months to look for work. Once you have a qualifying job, you move to a single permit for work. Brussels has the most English-language jobs.

Our support after you land

The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate: residence card renewals, resits, housing problems or the search year application.

Be honest with yourself

Is Belgium right for you?

Good fit

Belgium is a good fit if

  • You want a good public university with lower tuition than the UK or the Netherlands.
  • Your field is engineering, IT, life sciences, economics or tourism.
  • You're open to learning Dutch or French.

An honest note

Belgium is not the right choice if

  • You want an English-taught bachelor's straight after +2. Options are few.
  • You need a big Nepali community around you.
  • You're applying to a French-speaking university without French.

Don't bet your future on one country. Canada was the top choice for Nepali students until the caps came, and Nepali study permits fell 40.6% in a single year. Belgium is a smaller, steadier option worth comparing.
