The essentials

Netherlands: cost, entry and work rules

The Netherlands has one of the widest choices of English-taught degrees in Europe, practical universities of applied sciences, and a 12-month orientation year after you graduate.

Two warnings. Housing is very hard to find in Amsterdam, Utrecht and other big cities. And the government is reducing English-taught teaching, so some bachelor's are switching to Dutch. We check each programme's language every year.

Study in the Netherlands: the essentials
TuitionAbout €8,000 to €15,000 a year at universities of applied sciences, €12,000 to €22,000 at research universities (about Rs 13.7 lakh to Rs 37.7 lakh).
Living funds€1,130.77 a month for higher education (1 July to 31 December 2026), shown to the university, which applies to the IND for you. IND
First-year costAbout Rs 38 lakh to Rs 62 lakh: tuition, 12 months of living funds, the IND fee and your flight.
Entry after +2Universities of applied sciences (HBO) accept a strong +2 with English. Research universities usually want more: a foundation year or a year of a bachelor's in Nepal.
Entry after a bachelor'sA related bachelor's with good marks; research master's are selective, and some need a pre-master's.
English scoreIELTS 6.0 for most HBO bachelor's, 6.5 for most master's (some ask 7.0).
How you applyStudielink plus the university's own portal. Numerus fixus programmes close on 15 January; most others between 1 February and 1 May for non-EU students.
Work while studying16 hours a week in term (your employer needs a work permit for you), or full-time in June, July and August.
Stay after studyThe orientation year: 12 months to look for work, without a work permit.
ScholarshipsThe Holland Scholarship (€5,000 in your first year) and university scholarships, both competitive.
Rupee figures at Rs 171.38 per EUR (Nepal Rastra Bank sell rate, 18 October 2026). The IND updates the living-funds amount twice a year.

Our students' typical spend. Add Dutch health insurance if you take a paid job. At Rs 171.38 per EUR.

Part-time jobs

You can work 16 hours a week in term, or full-time in June, July and August, not both. Your employer has to get a work permit (TWV) for you, which puts some employers off. Minimum wage is set per hour and rises every January and July (Government.nl).

Food delivery, hospitality, warehouses and distribution centres are the common jobs. If you take a paid job, you must take out Dutch basic health insurance.

16 hours a week won't cover Dutch rent in big cities. Plan to live on your funds, not your wages.

Jobs after study

The orientation year lets you work without a work permit for 12 months. After that, most graduates move to the highly skilled migrant route, which has a lower salary threshold for recent graduates. Logistics, tech, engineering and agriculture-food are strong. Dutch helps outside international companies.

Culture and daily life

The Dutch are direct and punctual; arriving late to a meeting is rude. Everyone cycles. The Nepali community is small and spread across the Randstad cities. Teaching is practical and group-based at universities of applied sciences, more theoretical at research universities.

Plan each step in detail

Each step above has its own guide, written by a counsellor and checked against the official source.

What happens after

After you land in the Netherlands

Your first week

Register with your municipality to get your BSN (citizen service number), collect your residence permit card from the IND, open a bank account, and arrange health insurance if you'll work. Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing.

Work and study, honestly

Dutch programmes expect 40 hours a week of study, and you must pass enough credits each year to keep your permit. Treat 16 hours of work as the maximum, not the plan. Housing stress is the most common problem in the first semester; tell us early if your room falls through.

After graduation

The orientation year gives you 12 months to look for work without a work permit. Once you have a qualifying job, you move to the highly skilled migrant route, which has a lower salary threshold for recent graduates.

Our support after you land

The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate: progress rules, permit renewals, housing problems and the orientation year application.

Be honest with yourself

Is the Netherlands right for you?

Good fit

Netherlands is a good fit if

  • You want a practical, English-taught degree at a university of applied sciences, or a selective master's.
  • Your family can cover tuition and about €13,569 of living funds before you go.
  • You can start looking for housing months ahead.

An honest note

Netherlands is not the right choice if

  • You need to work more than 16 hours a week in term to survive.
  • You've just finished +2 and want a research university without a foundation year.
  • You need to fly within 3 months.
  • You won't consider cities outside Amsterdam. Rent and housing shortages there are severe.

Don't bet your future on one country. The Netherlands is cutting English-taught teaching; Canada's caps cut Nepali study permits by 40.6% in a year. Rules move, so the advice has to follow them.

Questions about studying in the Netherlands

How much does it cost to study in the Netherlands from Nepal?

About Rs 38 lakh to Rs 62 lakh for the first year: tuition of €8,000 to €22,000, about €13,569 in living funds, the €254 IND fee and your flight, at Rs 171.38 per EUR (18 October 2026).

How much bank balance is required for a Netherlands student visa?

€1,130.77 a month for higher education students (1 July to 31 December 2026), usually for 12 months. Many universities ask you to pay it to them; they pay it back monthly. The IND updates the figure twice a year: IND required amounts.

Can I study in the Netherlands after +2?

Yes, at universities of applied sciences, with a strong +2 and English. Research universities usually ask for a foundation year or a year of university study first. Aarav went the applied sciences route.

Can I work in the Netherlands while studying?

Yes: 16 hours a week in term, or full-time in June, July and August. Your employer needs a work permit (TWV) for you, and you need Dutch health insurance once you work.

Who applies for the MVV and residence permit?

The university does, as your recognised sponsor. You provide the documents and sign the antecedents certificate; once the IND approves, you collect the MVV at the Dutch mission.

Can I stay in the Netherlands after graduation?

Yes, through the orientation year: 12 months to look for work, with no work permit needed.
