Where Smriti started

Smriti had worked in quality control at a dairy in Hetauda after her BTech and wanted to study food technology in Wageningen. Her marks were well above the entry level. Her first scholarship essay listed her grades.

What we found

Scholarship committees know your grades already; they want to know what you'll do. We asked her what problem she'd seen at the dairy that she couldn't solve. Her second draft was about milk spoilage in the cold chain in Nepal, and what she'd learn to fix it.

We also told her plainly: the Holland Scholarship is €5,000 once, in the first year. It helps; it doesn't pay for the course.

My first essay said what I'd done. The second said what I'd do. Only the second one won.

If your profile looks like this

  1. 1

Scholarship essays should be about the problem you'll work on, not your grades.

  2. 2

The Holland Scholarship is €5,000 once. Budget for the rest. See Netherlands costs.

  3. 3

Work in your field before a master's gives your essay something real to say.
