Studying in Australia from Nepal costs about Rs 66 lakh to Rs 84 lakh for the first year, before part-time income. You need IELTS 6.0 (or PTE) for the visa and a money file that proves tuition plus AUD 29,710 a year. Last year 468 of our 512 Australia visa files were approved. Most students fly 4 to 6 months after the first call.

The essentials
Australia is still the first choice for most Nepali students. It's English-speaking, it has 2 intakes a year, the Nepali community is large, and a degree gives you 2 to 3 years of work rights afterwards.
It's also the most expensive country we cover, and the visa officer looks hard at two things: whether your money is real, and whether you're really going to study. Get those two right and the rest is paperwork.
The table has the numbers. The process section shows what each one costs you and when.
| Tuition | AUD 28,000 to 45,000 a year at most universities (about Rs 29.7 lakh to Rs 47.7 lakh). Diplomas and pathway colleges start from about AUD 15,000. |
|---|---|
| Money to show for the visa | First-year tuition, plus AUD 29,710 for living costs, plus travel. Shown through savings, an education loan or a sponsor's income. Home Affairs rules |
| First-year cost | About Rs 66 lakh to Rs 84 lakh, all in: tuition, living costs, health cover, visa fee and flight, before any part-time income. |
| Marks after +2 | GPA 2.4 to 3.0 (NEB) for a bachelor's at most universities. Below that, a diploma that moves into year 2 of the bachelor's. |
| Marks after a bachelor's | CGPA 2.6 to 3.0, or 50% to 60%, for most master's. Many want a bachelor's in a related field. |
| Study gap | No official limit. What counts is proof of what you did in the gap: a job, a business, a course. |
| English score | IELTS Academic 6.0 overall for the visa, or the PTE or TOEFL equal. Most master's ask for 6.5 with no band below 6.0. |
| Intakes | February and July at every university. Some also start in November. Apply 4 to 6 months before. |
| Work while studying | 48 hours a fortnight in term, unlimited in official breaks. |
| Stay after study | Temporary Graduate visa (485): 2 years after a bachelor's or coursework master's, 3 years after a research master's or PhD, if you're 35 or under. |
| Permanent residency | Possible through the skilled points test. Never automatic, and never promised by an honest consultancy. |
Living in Australia
This is what a student sharing a room typically spends in a month in 2026. Rent is most of it, and it decides which city you can afford more than tuition does.
| City | Rent (shared room) | Food | Transport and phone | Total a month | In rupees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | AUD 1,300 to 1,700 | AUD 450 to 600 | AUD 250 to 300 | AUD 2,000 to 2,600 | Rs 2.1 to 2.8 lakh |
| Melbourne | AUD 1,100 to 1,500 | AUD 450 to 600 | AUD 250 to 300 | AUD 1,800 to 2,400 | Rs 1.9 to 2.5 lakh |
| Brisbane | AUD 1,000 to 1,400 | AUD 420 to 550 | AUD 230 to 250 | AUD 1,650 to 2,200 | Rs 1.7 to 2.3 lakh |
| Adelaide | AUD 850 to 1,200 | AUD 400 to 520 | AUD 200 to 230 | AUD 1,450 to 1,950 | Rs 1.5 to 2.1 lakh |
You can work 48 hours a fortnight while your course is running, and as many hours as you want in official breaks. The national minimum wage is AUD 26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026 (Fair Work Ombudsman). Casual jobs pay more per hour, because they include a loading.
Most of our students find their first job within 2 to 8 weeks: cleaning, warehouses, food delivery, retail, restaurants, and aged care once they have the certificate. At 20 hours a week on minimum wage, that's about AUD 2,290 a month before tax, which covers living costs in Adelaide but not in Sydney.
Plan to pay tuition from home, not from part-time work. Bring at least 3 months of living money. Going over 48 hours in a fortnight during term can cost you your visa, and employers who pay cash below the minimum wage are common enough that you should know your rights before your first shift.
Australia's job market pays well, but it rewards local experience and the right field. Nursing, aged care, teaching, engineering, IT and trades are where demand has stayed strong. Accounting and business degrees are popular with Nepali students and much more crowded.
Jobs and Skills Australia publishes which occupations are in shortage each year (Occupation Shortage List). We look at it with you before you pick a course, because it's a better guide than any consultancy's PR list.
122,506 people born in Nepal lived in Australia at the 2021 census (ABS), most of them in Sydney and Melbourne. You'll find Nepali groceries, momo shops, Dashain and Tihar programmes and Nepali student associations at most big universities.
Classes are smaller and more discussion-based than in Nepal, and assignments count for more than final exams. Plagiarism is taken seriously. Melbourne and Canberra winters are colder than people expect; Brisbane and Darwin are hot and humid. Public transport is good in the big cities and thin outside them.

The process
From first call to first lecture usually takes 4 to 6 months for Australia. The longest waits are the offer letter and the visa decision, and neither is in anyone's control. Everything else moves at the speed of your documents.

What happens after
Most universities run orientation in the week before classes. In that week: enrol, collect your student card, apply online for your tax file number, open a bank account (many students open one before they fly), get a local SIM and a transport card.
Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing. It's a real call, not a form: is the room what you were promised, did enrolment work, is your money lasting.
A full-time course is about 20 hours of classes and study a week, and more around assignments. Add 20 hours of shift work, travel and cooking, and your week is full. Students who struggle are usually the ones working more than they planned in the first semester to pay rent. Bring enough money for 3 months and let the job come second.
Australia also checks your course progress. Failing subjects can put your visa at risk, so tell us early if a subject is going badly, and talk to the university's student support before results come out.
Finishing a bachelor's or a coursework master's gives you 2 years on the Temporary Graduate visa (485), or 3 years after a research degree, if you're 35 or under when you apply. The visa fee is AUD 5,750 from 1 July 2026, and it needs a fresh English score (IELTS 6.5 overall, 5.5 in each band, or equal).
Permanent residency comes through the skilled migration points test, state nomination or an employer. It depends on your occupation, age, English and Australian work experience, and the rules change most years. Some of our students have it; many are still working towards it. Choose a degree that's worth it even if PR never comes.
Australian law only allows registered migration agents to give migration advice in Australia. When you get to that stage, we'll point you to one rather than guess.
The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate. Students call us about changing course or university, adding a family member, a CoE that needs extending, or a landlord who won't return a bond. If it's something we can't do from Kathmandu, we'll tell you who can.
Be honest with yourself
Good fit
An honest note
Anyone who guarantees your Australian visa is lying. We lodged 512 Australia files last year and 44 were still refused, with clean files and honest money papers. Since the 8 July 2026 law, a guarantee claim can cost a consultancy its licence and its Rs 25 lakh deposit.
About Rs 66 lakh to Rs 84 lakh for the first year, all in: tuition of AUD 28,000 to 45,000, living costs, health cover, the AUD 2,500 visa fee and your flight. That's at Rs 105.97 per AUD (18 October 2026).
Diplomas and pathway colleges cost less. Part-time work can cover much of your living costs after the first few months, but not your tuition.
Enough to cover your first year's tuition, AUD 29,710 for living costs and your travel. Most families show it through a mix of savings, an education loan and the sponsor's income.
The officer looks at where the money came from, not just the balance on one day. A large deposit with no history behind it is a common reason for refusal. See Home Affairs.
After +2, most universities we work with ask for a NEB GPA of 2.4 to 3.0 for a bachelor's. After a bachelor's, most master's ask for a CGPA of 2.6 to 3.0, or 50% to 60%.
If your marks are lower, a diploma that moves into the second year of a bachelor's is often the better route. Bikash, one of our students in Sydney, went that way.
Yes, with PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT instead. You can't skip the English test altogether: a medium of instruction letter from your Nepali college isn't accepted for the visa.
The visa needs IELTS 6.0 overall or the equal score. Many students find PTE results come faster. Our PTE classes and IELTS classes start every second Sunday.
For our files, 91.4% in FY 2025/26: 468 approved out of 512 lodged. The 44 refusals were mostly about how money was explained, or study plans that didn't follow from the student's background.
Australia's Department of Home Affairs publishes grant rates by country of citizenship. Any consultancy quoting 100% is not counting honestly.
No official limit. Officers look for a believable reason. A gap filled with a job, a business or a course, with letters and tax records to prove it, is rarely the problem. An unexplained gap often is.
Aashma, refused through another agent, was approved on her second file once her two years in the family shop were documented.
Yes, the student visa allows family members, but you must show extra money for them and their health cover, and the officer looks closely at the whole family's reasons.
Partners of master's and PhD students can usually work unlimited hours; partners of other students are limited to 48 hours a fortnight. Check the current rules on Home Affairs.
Some students do, through the skilled points test, state nomination or an employer. It isn't automatic, and the rules change most years. Pick a course that's worth doing even without PR.
We'll tell you which fields Australia is short of before you choose. For PR advice in Australia you'll need a registered migration agent.
