Studying in Sweden from Nepal costs about Rs 30 lakh to Rs 45 lakh for the first year. You apply in one central round that closes on 15 January, show SEK 10,656 a month for living costs, and, since 11 June 2026, can work only 15 hours a week in term. Last year 57 of our 61 Sweden permit files were approved.

His budget assumed full-time work. When Sweden capped student work at 15 hours, we rebuilt the money plan before he paid a krona.

The essentials
Sweden is strong for master's in engineering, sustainability, design and IT, taught in English, with one central application for almost every university.
Two things changed in 2026 that every Nepali student should know. From 11 June 2026, bachelor's and master's students on new permits can work only 15 hours a week in term. And from 1 October 2026 the rules for family members changed. Plan your money without counting on big part-time earnings.
The table has the numbers. The process and permit section shows every step.
| Tuition | About SEK 80,000 to 295,000 a year; most master's we see are SEK 100,000 to 160,000 (about Rs 15.4 lakh to Rs 24.6 lakh). |
|---|---|
| Living funds for the permit | SEK 10,656 for each month of study (applications in 2026), in your own bank account. Migrationsverket |
| First-year cost | About Rs 30 lakh to Rs 45 lakh: tuition, living funds, the SEK 1,500 permit fee, the application fee and your flight. |
| Entry after +2 | Few English-taught bachelor's, with high entry requirements. Most Nepali students go to Sweden for a master's. |
| Entry after a bachelor's | A related bachelor's, usually with good marks (CGPA 3.0 or more helps a lot). Each programme ranks applicants. |
| English score | "English 6": usually IELTS 6.5 with no band below 5.5, or the TOEFL equal. |
| How you apply | universityadmissions.se, usually mid-October to 15 January for August starts. Application fee SEK 900. |
| Work while studying | 15 hours a week for bachelor's and master's students granted a permit on or after 11 June 2026; full-time in June, July and August. |
| Stay after study | A permit to look for work or start a business, for up to 12 months. |
| Family | Rules for partners and children joining students changed on 1 October 2026. Check Migrationsverket before you plan. |
Living in Sweden
Your SEK 10,656 a month is set to cover a student's living costs. In Stockholm it's tight; in smaller cities it's comfortable.
| City | Rent (student room) | Food | Transport and phone | Total a month | In rupees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stockholm | SEK 5,000 to 7,000 | SEK 3,000 to 3,500 | SEK 1,000 to 1,200 | SEK 9,500 to 12,000 | Rs 1.46 to 1.85 lakh |
| Uppsala and Gothenburg | SEK 4,300 to 5,800 | SEK 2,800 to 3,300 | SEK 900 to 1,100 | SEK 8,500 to 10,500 | Rs 1.31 to 1.62 lakh |
| Lund and Malmรถ | SEK 4,000 to 5,500 | SEK 2,800 to 3,300 | SEK 800 to 1,000 | SEK 8,000 to 10,000 | Rs 1.23 to 1.54 lakh |
| Umeรฅ and Linkรถping | SEK 3,600 to 4,800 | SEK 2,700 to 3,100 | SEK 700 to 900 | SEK 7,500 to 9,000 | Rs 1.15 to 1.39 lakh |
Since 11 June 2026, you can work 15 hours a week in term on a new bachelor's or master's permit, and full-time in June, July and August. Going over the limit can cost you your permit or its extension.
Sweden has no national minimum wage; pay is set by collective agreements, usually about SEK 130 to 150 an hour in the jobs students do. At 15 hours a week that's roughly SEK 8,500 to 9,500 a month before tax: help with living costs, not tuition.
Before June 2026, students could work unlimited hours. Anyone still quoting that is out of date. Plan your money on 15 hours.
Sweden hires engineers, IT specialists and people in sustainability and health. Many international graduates find work in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmรถ, but Swedish helps in most workplaces outside tech. Free Swedish courses (SFI) are open to residents.
The Nepali community is small and close, mostly in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Uppsala. Swedish teaching is informal and group-based; you call teachers by their first names and they expect you to speak up.
Summers are long and light; winters dark, especially in the north. Almost everything is paid by card or app, and you'll need a personal identity number (personnummer) for most things.

Money
Sweden from Nepal costs about Rs 30 to 45 lakh for year 1: tuition, the SEK 10,656 a month funds rule, the permit fee, rent by city and the 15-hour work limit.

What happens after
Pick up your residence permit card, register with the Swedish Tax Agency for a personnummer if you're staying a year or more, enrol, and open a bank account. Your counsellor calls you within 7 days of landing.
With 15 hours a week, part-time work covers some living costs, not all. Swedish master's are group- and project-based, with continuous assessment; they reward students who speak up. Dark winters are hard in the first year; join student associations early.
You can apply for a permit to look for work or start a business for up to 12 months after you finish. Once you have a job offer that meets the rules, you move to a work permit. Swedish makes the job search much easier outside tech.
The same counsellor stays with you until you graduate: permit extensions, the work-hour rules, housing problems or changing programme.

An honest note
Don't bet your future on one country. Sweden changed its work rules in a single year. Canada's caps cut Nepali study permits by 40.6% in a year. We cover 10 countries so the advice can follow the rules.
About Rs 30 lakh to Rs 45 lakh for the first year: tuition (most master's SEK 100,000 to 160,000), living funds of SEK 10,656 a month, the SEK 1,500 permit fee, the SEK 900 application fee and your flight. At Rs 15.39 per SEK (18 October 2026).
SEK 10,656 for each month you'll study (applications in 2026), in your own bank account. Migrationsverket doesn't count credit lines. See Migrationsverket.
Yes, but less than before. Bachelor's and master's students granted a permit on or after 11 June 2026 can work 15 hours a week in term, and full-time in June, July and August. Breaking the limit can lead to the permit being withdrawn.
No. Students from outside the EU pay tuition. Some universities offer tuition waivers, and the Swedish Institute runs scholarships for some countries and profiles. We check what you're eligible for.
For August starts, the international round on universityadmissions.se usually runs from mid-October to 15 January, with documents due shortly after.
Sweden accepts IELTS, TOEFL and some other tests, and in a few cases earlier English-taught study. Most Nepali applicants use IELTS 6.5 with no band below 5.5.
You can apply for a permit to look for work or start a business for up to 12 months after you graduate.
