Guide · Choosing a country
The cheapest countries to study abroad from Nepal, in rupees
Of the 10 countries we work with, Germany is the cheapest strong choice: about Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh for the first year at a public university, because most charge no tuition. Cyprus can cost less, but work and post-study rights are thin. Australia is the most expensive at Rs 66 lakh to Rs 84 lakh. The cheapest country for you is the one your family can actually prove the money for.

First-year cost in 10 countries, compared
This is what the first year costs, all in: tuition, the living money you must show or spend, visa or permit fees, health cover and your flight. It's before any part-time income, because you can't count income you haven't earned yet.
| Country | First-year cost | Tuition a year | Living money to show | Work in term | Stay after study |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyprus | Rs 22 to 37 lakh | €3,500 to €9,000 (private) | Set per file by the university and migration office | Limited, set sectors | Employer permit only |
| Germany | Rs 25 to 30 lakh (public) | None at most public universities; semester fee €150 to €400 | €11,904 a year, blocked account | 140 full days a year | 18 months to find a job |
| Finland | Rs 25 to 40 lakh | €6,000 to €18,000, often 50% off year 1 | €9,600 a year | 30 hrs a week (average) | Up to 2 years |
| Sweden | Rs 30 to 45 lakh | SEK 100,000 to 160,000 for most master's | SEK 10,656 a month | 15 hrs a week | Up to 12 months |
| Belgium | Rs 31 to 45 lakh | Up to €4,175 (French-speaking) or €6,000 to €12,000 (Flemish) | €1,062 a month | 20 hrs a week | 12-month search year |
| Denmark | Rs 33 to 50 lakh | DKK 45,000 to 120,000 | DKK 7,426 a month | 20 hrs a week | Establishment card |
| Netherlands | Rs 38 to 62 lakh | €8,000 to €22,000 | €1,130.77 a month | 16 hrs a week | 12-month orientation year |
| Norway | Rs 45 to 63 lakh | NOK 130,000 to 250,000 | NOK 170,368 a year | 20 hrs a week | Up to 1 year |
| UK | Rs 55 to 85 lakh (one-year master's) | £14,000 to £25,000 | £1,171 a month outside London, up to 9 months | 20 hrs a week | 2 years (18 months from 2027) |
| Australia | Rs 66 to 84 lakh | AUD 28,000 to 45,000 | AUD 29,710 a year, plus tuition | 48 hrs a fortnight | 2 to 3 years |
Two things the table can't show. Tuition is set by each university, so your real figure comes from your offer letter. And rupee totals move with the exchange rate: a 5% fall in the rupee adds about Rs 3 lakh to a Rs 60 lakh year.
Why the cheapest tuition isn't always the cheapest year
Tuition is only one part of the bill. In most of Europe the money you must show for living costs is bigger than the tuition, and it has to be in your account before the permit, not earned later.
Germany is cheap, but slow and German-speaking
Germany's public universities charge no tuition in most states, but you still block €11,904 for the year before the visa. Admissions are slow, the visa appointment in Kathmandu can take weeks, and most part-time jobs need German. A Nepali +2 usually isn't direct entry to a bachelor's: you go through a Studienkolleg first. The cost of studying in Germany guide has every euro.
Norway isn't free any more
Norway's public universities have charged non-EU students tuition since autumn 2023. Older posts on Facebook still say it's free. It isn't, and with NOK 170,368 to show for living costs, it's now one of the dearer countries on our list.
Cyprus is cheap, with two warnings
Republic of Cyprus degrees are cheap and recognised in the EU. But universities in the north of the island aren't recognised by the Republic or most of the EU, and some agents sell them as "Cyprus". Work rights are limited to set sectors, and there's no general post-study permit, so plan to pay for everything from home.
Work hours change the real cost
Finland lets you work 30 hours a week on average. Sweden cut new students to 15 hours a week from 11 June 2026. Over a year that's a difference of hundreds of thousands of rupees in what you can earn, which matters more than a €2,000 difference in tuition.
Compare the whole degree, not one year
A one-year UK master's costs more per year than a two-year master's in Finland, but you pay only one year of rent and start earning a year sooner.
| Country | Usual length | Rough total |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (public) | 2 years | Rs 50 to 60 lakh |
| Finland | 2 years | Rs 50 to 85 lakh, depending on whether the scholarship continues into year 2 |
| UK | 1 year | Rs 55 to 85 lakh |
| Australia | 1.5 to 2 years | Rs 1 crore or more |
Nobody should choose on price alone, but if your family has a fixed ceiling, this is the comparison that tells you what fits.
What you pay in Nepal before you fly
These come before any money leaves the country, and families often leave them out of the budget.
| Cost | Amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Rs 36,000 | IDP or British Council |
| PTE Academic (if you take PTE instead) | USD 220, about Rs 33,500 | Pearson |
| NOC | Rs 2,000 | Ministry of Education |
| Our fee (if you use us) | Rs 20,000 per application file | Prasthan Education, by bank |
| Translation, notary, valuation, bank letters | A few thousand to Rs 25,000, depending on the papers | Each office |
| Flight | About Rs 80,000 (Cyprus) to Rs 1.6 lakh (Australia) one way | Airline |
Four ways to lower the cost
- Apply for the scholarship with the application. Finnish universities cut first-year tuition by 50% to 100% for strong applicants, and the Netherlands and Sweden have national scholarships. Rojina, one of our students in Helsinki, came to us for Australia and went to Finland on a 50% scholarship instead.
- Choose the city, not just the country. Rent decides your monthly cost. A shared room and living costs in Adelaide run about Rs 60,000 a month less than in Sydney.
- Pick the shorter route. A one-year master's, or a diploma that moves into year 2 of a bachelor's, saves a year of living costs.
- Check the work rule before you count on income. 48 hours a fortnight in Australia, 15 hours a week in Sweden. Tuition should never depend on part-time work.
Don't choose on price alone
Don't bet your future on one country. Canada was the top choice for Nepali students until the caps came, and Nepali study permits fell 40.6% in a single year. That's why we cover Australia and 9 European countries: the advice can follow the rules and your budget, not the other way round.
The cheapest country is the wrong one if the degree doesn't lead anywhere you want to work, if the language blocks every part-time job, or if your family's money can't be shown the way that country asks. Compare 2 or 3 countries side by side on our destinations page, then talk to a counsellor who covers all of them.
