Study in Europe from Nepal

Study in Europe from Nepal, country by country

We cover 9 European countries: Germany, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and Cyprus. The first year costs from about Rs 22 lakh (Cyprus) and Rs 25 lakh (a public university in Germany) up to about Rs 85 lakh (a UK master's). There's no single Europe student visa: each country has its own permit, rules and money to show.

There's no single Europe student visa

Nepali students often ask how to get "a Europe visa". You don't. You apply for the student permit of the one country where your university is, under that country's rules.

  • Germany: a national student visa from the German Embassy in Kathmandu, with a blocked account and, for German-taught courses, a language certificate handed in with the application.
  • Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway: a residence permit applied for online with Migri, Migrationsverket, SIRI or UDI, then identification in person.
  • The Netherlands: the university applies to the IND for you; Nepali citizens need an MVV entry visa as well.
  • Belgium: a type D visa, then a residence permit after you arrive.
  • The UK: a Student visa with a CAS from the university and a TB test in Kathmandu. The UK isn't in the EU or Schengen.
  • Cyprus: the university applies for your entry permit. Choose the Republic of Cyprus only; Northern Cyprus degrees aren't recognised the same way.

A student permit from a Schengen country lets you visit the others for short trips, up to 90 days in any 180. It doesn't let you study or work in them.

Which European country fits you

No European country is "easy" for a visa. The files that go through are the ones where the course follows your background and the money is real and explained. Start from your situation instead.

  • Lowest total cost: Germany at a public university, if you can fund the €11,904 blocked account, or Cyprus, if you accept the limited work and stay rules.
  • Scholarships that cut tuition: Finland, where most universities reduce non-EU tuition for good applicants. Sweden's Swedish Institute scholarships are competitive but real.
  • Straight after +2: the Netherlands' universities of applied sciences, Finland, the UK and Cyprus take strong +2 students directly. Germany usually needs a Studienkolleg year after +2.
  • The longest stay after study: Finland (up to 2 years) and Germany (18 months).
  • Family coming with you: the UK no longer allows it on taught master's. The Nordic countries and the Netherlands have their own rules; ask before you apply.

Students choosing between two countries often keep both files moving and decide with the offers in hand.

English gets you in; the local language gets you the job

Most English-taught programmes in these countries ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. Some universities accept a medium of instruction letter instead; our guide to studying abroad without IELTS lists where that works.

The catch is work. Part-time jobs in Germany, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway without the local language are mostly cleaning, delivery, warehouses and kitchens, and graduate jobs often ask for it. Start German, Finnish or Swedish before you fly, even at A1. The Netherlands and the UK are the easiest places to work in English.

Plan to pay tuition and the first year's living costs from home. Part-time pay helps with year 2, not year 1.

When Europe isn't the right choice

  • You need to work full-time to pay tuition. Every country here limits term-time work, and Sweden cut its limit to 15 hours a week for new permits.
  • You want permanent residence fast. Europe's routes to PR are slower and usually need the local language.
  • You chose a country only because a Facebook post said it's free. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands all charge non-EU tuition now; only Germany's public universities stay close to free.
  • You won't learn any of the local language. You can study in English, but life and work will be harder outside the UK and the Netherlands.

In those cases, look at studying in Australia, or talk it through with us first. We'd rather tell you now than after you've paid an application fee.

Questions about studying in Europe

Which country is best for Nepali students in Europe?

It depends on your budget and plans. Germany is the cheapest at a public university, Finland has the most tuition scholarships and up to 2 years to look for work, and the Netherlands and the UK are the easiest places to work in English. The table above puts all 9 side by side.

How much does it cost to study in Europe from Nepal?

From about Rs 22 lakh to Rs 37 lakh for the first year in Cyprus and Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh at a public university in Germany, up to about Rs 85 lakh for a one-year master's in the UK. That includes tuition, living costs, visa and flight.

Which European country is easiest to get a student visa for from Nepal?

None is easy. Each country checks that your course makes sense and that your money is real and enough. A well-prepared file for any of the 9 countries has a better chance than a weak file for a country that's said to be easy.

How do I get a Europe student visa from Nepal?

There's no single Europe visa. You apply for the student visa or residence permit of the country where your university is, after you have an admission letter, your NOC and the money that country asks for.

Can I study in Europe without IELTS?

At some universities, yes, with a medium of instruction letter from your Nepali college. It depends on the university, not the country, and some embassies still ask for a test. Our without IELTS guide explains where it works.

Is studying in Europe free for Nepali students?

Mostly not any more. Germany's public universities charge only a semester contribution, but Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK and Cyprus charge non-EU tuition. Living costs are the bigger expense almost everywhere.
