Northern Cyprus universities and degree recognition, for Nepali students
Degrees from universities in Northern Cyprus aren't recognised by the Republic of Cyprus or most of the EU. The north of the island calls itself the TRNC, and only Turkey recognises it as a country. Some agents in Nepal sell these universities as "Cyprus". If your offer letter has an address in Kyrenia, Famagusta or northern Nicosia, or tells you to fly in through Turkey, stop and check before you pay anything.

Republic of Cyprus or the north?
- Republic of Cyprus
- EU member. Recognised degrees. Entry permit through the university
- Northern Cyprus (TRNC)
- Recognised only by Turkey. Degrees not recognised by the Republic or most of the EU
- How you arrive
- Republic: Larnaca or Paphos. North: usually via Turkey to Ercan
- Where to check a university
- The Republic's Ministry of Education and the CYQAA
As of October 2026. We only recommend universities in the Republic of Cyprus.
Why there are two "Cyprus"
Cyprus has been divided since 1974. The south is the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member since 2004. The north is run by an administration that calls itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). No country except Turkey recognises it.
Universities in the north operate under that administration. The Republic of Cyprus doesn't accredit them, and EU rules don't apply there in practice. That's why a degree from the north doesn't carry the recognition a European degree should.
What a northern degree means for you
- Recognition. The Republic of Cyprus and most EU countries don't recognise the degree. Employers and universities elsewhere may not either.
- Further study. A master's or PhD elsewhere in Europe can refuse your northern bachelor's.
- Travel and work. Students who enter the north through Turkey can't legally cross into the Republic to live, work or study there. The EU side isn't open to you.
- Back in Nepal. Before you pay, ask Nepal's equivalence authority whether the degree will be accepted for jobs or further study here, and get the answer in writing.
Some students go to the north knowingly, because fees are low. That's their choice to make. Our job is to make sure nobody makes it without knowing.
How to tell if an offer is from the north
Read the offer letter and the payment instructions. These are the giveaways.
- The address is in Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Morphou (Güzelyurt) or the northern part of Nicosia (Lefkoşa)
- You're told to fly via Istanbul or Ankara to Ercan airport, not to Larnaca or Paphos
- There's no entry permit from the Republic's Civil Registry and Migration Department
- Fees are paid to a bank in Turkey or the north, sometimes in Turkish lira
- The agent avoids saying "Republic of Cyprus" and just says "Cyprus, in Europe"
Then check the university on the Republic's own lists: the Ministry of Education and the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA). If it isn't there, it isn't a Republic of Cyprus university.
If you've already paid a deposit
Don't pay the rest. Ask for the deposit back in writing, keep every receipt and message, and ask the agent which country's ministry accredits the university.
Dawa, from Kathmandu, had paid a deposit through another agent for a computer science degree in "Cyprus". The offer's address was in the north. His parents asked us to check before paying the rest. With our help they requested the deposit back in writing and recovered part of it, and he started at a recognised university in Limassol in February 2026.
If an agent misled you about where a university is, you can complain to the Ministry of Education. Under Nepal's 2026 consultancy rules, a licence can be cancelled for misleading information. Our guide to choosing a consultancy explains how to check one.
The recognised alternative in the Republic
The Republic of Cyprus has recognised private universities that teach in English, mostly in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca. Tuition is about €3,500 to €9,000 a year, and the first year costs about Rs 22 lakh to Rs 37 lakh all in. The university applies for your entry permit.
Two honest warnings still apply in the Republic: part-time work for students is limited to set sectors, and there's no general post-study work permit. Plan to pay for everything from home. Our Cyprus page has the full process and every fee.
